Youth makes up about 30 percent of the Indonesian population. The 1997 economic crisis exposed local youth to greater challenges that led to increased number of school drop out, unemployment, crimes, drug abuse and other high risk behaviors.

This, thus, increases their vulnerability to violence and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS. Empowering young people in different aspects of live allow them to protect themselves by making responsible life choices, including about their sexuality, reproductive health right, education and income generating activities. For the commemoration of World AIDS Day on December 1st, UNFPA supports MTV’s 2006 Staying Alive campaign, featuring stage performance by young Indonesian celebrities, youth bands and with a number of educative activities and messages related to HIV/AIDS and youth.
