Sharing Indonesia’s Family Planning Achievements at ICFP

calendar_today 27 January 2016

Indonesia’s experience in meeting the family planning needs under the universal health insurance scheme will be shared at a side event at the fourth International Conference on Family Planning in Bali on Thursday morning.

Hosted by UNFPA Indonesia together with the University of Gajah Mada, the session will highlight the progress and the challenges the country has experienced since the Government launched its health insurance scheme in January 2014.

With the scheme currently covering more than 130 million people in Indonesia, the Government has a goal to provide total coverage for the entire population by 2019.

The challenges of managing such a large population under one scheme are enormous but the Government of Indonesia is committed to providing easy, accessible and quality health care to its people, including family planning services.

Panelists for this event include Prof. Ali Ghufron from the University of Gajah Mada, Prof. Laksono Trisnantoro from the University of Gajah Mada and Dr. Emi Nurjasmi from the Indonesian Midwives Association.

The session will be in Bahasa Indonesian.

There will also be another panel discussion alongside this event by UNFPA Indonesia on Islam and the country’s family planning programme.

Prof. Dr. Amin Abdullah, the former rector of the Islamic State University of Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta, Dr. Risman Musa, the former Deputy Coordinating Minister of People’s Welfare  and Ms. Badriyah Fayumi, the Vice Chairperson of Family Welfare Agency, Nahdatul Ulama, will lead the panel discussion on Indonesia’s family planning programme.

Topics will include a look at Islamic perspectives of Indonesia’s family planning programme, the strategies and approaches used to involve Muslim religious leaders in family planning and facing the challenges of emerging conservative interpretations. The session will also examine how religious leaders, civil society organizations and women’s movement groups can support progress in this area.
