WHAT
To commemorate World Population Day 2015, UNFPA Indonesia will host a national seminar and press conference in line with this year’s theme “Vulnerable Populations in Emergencies”. The event will address how the Government of Indonesia can improve measures to reduce and prevent the vulnerability of women, girls and youth in emergency situations.

BACKGROUND
As one of the most vulnerable countries to natural disasters, Indonesia has to cope with the constant risk of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods and tsunamis.
In 2014, there were a total of 1559 disasters recorded in Indonesia, according to official data from BNPB, resulting in 490 deaths. Thousands of people were displaced, and many lost loved ones, their homes and their possessions.
In times of humanitarian emergencies – whether caused by natural disasters or conflict – the vulnerability of women, girls and young people is often increased. Girls and women in crisis situations face a much greater risk of abuse, sexual exploitation, violence, forced marriage, reproductive health-related illnesses, and death due to the lack of protection and an absence of aid delivery to their needs.
