JAKARTA, Indonesia:
The National Family Planning Coordinating Board (BKKBN) launches
on Tuesday a newly revitalized national Family Planning (FP)
initiative and sets a target of 6.6 million new contraceptive
users in 2008.
The revitalized initiative aims at strengthening FP services
and information in the country and improving coordination
with the private service providers to ensure quality services,
especially for users from middle-upper economic status. It
is hoped that with the new initiative, 4 millions of the 6.6
million new users can access reliable FP services provided
by private sector. Poor families can obtain free FP services
at the government-sponsored providers.
BKKBN’s Deputy for Family Planning and Reproductive
Health Siswanto Agus Wilopo said 30 percent of the 29.2 million
contraceptive users are from low economic bracket, while the
remaining 70 percent come from middle and upper bracket.
Separately, UNFPA Representative Dr. Zahidul Huque
welcomed the initiative and said that UNFPA will support the
national FP programme through demand creation to stimulate
utilization of FP information and services nationwide and
in the 6 supported provinces through respective administrations.
Through its 6th Country Programme, ending in 2005, the Fund
provided supports for reproductive health commodity supplies
to cover the needs of communities in the 6 supported provinces
through the respective administrations.
