JAKARTA, Indonesia - The United Nations Population
Fund (UNFPA) has allocated on Friday US$96.000 for its response
to floods in Jakarta and surrounding areas. As
its immediate assistance, UNFPA sends today 800 of 8300 various
personal hygiene kits for distribution to heavily
affected people in temporary settlements scattered across
the capital.
The personal hygiene kits will be distributed
through the Crisis Management Centre organized by the Department
of Health.
Specially designed for specific target groups,
the kits consist of 1600 personal hygiene kits for pregnant
women, 1550 kits for women after childbirth and
1500 kits for newborns and 3650 for women at reproductive
age (15-49 year old). The hygiene kit for women
at reproductive age consists of shirt, underwear, sanitary
napkin and bathing items, among others. These
specific groups have specific needs that are often neglected
in times of crisis and failures to meet these needs
can compromise their overall wellbeing.
Currently UNFPA is in close coordination with
the Ministry of Health, assessing reproductive health needs
for affected Jakartans,” said Dr. Zahidul
Huque, UNFPA Representative in Indonesia.
The flood that inundates parts of Jakarta and
greater Jakarta area in the past 7 days has claimed the lives
of 52 people and according to flood information
center “Posko Banjir DKI Jakarta”, forced around
386,678 people to seek shelters in nearby temporary
settlements. While the water starts receding since Wednesday,
community members are told to remain alert for
possible upcoming floods as the Meteorology and Geophysics
Agency predicts that heavy rains will continue
over the next few days.
