Free health care for poor community in Johar Baru, Central Jakarta

Jakarta, 02 July 2007, Around 70 pregnant women, 50 newborns and 50 elderly from poor families in Johar Baru subdistrict in Central Jakarta benefit from free health care conducted as part of a series of activities to mark the Safe Motherhood National Awareness Campaign 2007, which UNFPA supports. Central Jakarta is one of the five mayoralties in Jakarta with the smallest area coverage and the highest population density at 14,000 people/kilometer square. One third of its 130 neighborhood units are poor and crowded. Central Jakarta Mayor Muhayat said his office focuses on improving knowledge and access to health care to local families. “We are also working to promote women’s role and empower them with productive skill to earn additional income for their families.” Muhayat added.
